JWG Tutorials:
Installing New Fonts

As this is now becoming a frequently asked question, I thought it might be helpful to write a little tutorial on it: First of all, make a new folder somewhere on your computer that you will remember, and that is easy to find for you....perhaps in your My Documents folder... and name it "New Fonts".

Go and find some attractive new fonts to download... (I have links to several free fonts sites in the jwg directory to start you off).

When you have chosen some fonts, you will notice that most of them are zipped up (compressed) for quicker downloading. You will need an unzipping utility to extract the files after download. Click here for links to a few of the most popular...

If you wish, you can make a subfolder within your New Fonts folder and call it Zips, but that is up to you. Download the fonts to the New Fonts folder (tell the dialog box that you want to save the file, and browse to the New Fonts folder--or your Zips folder-- before clicking OK). Extract the fonts (using your chosen unzipping program) into your New Fonts folder. Leave them there and go and find a few more....

When you have downloaded and unzipped some fonts into your folder, you are now ready to install them.

You can install them one at a time but it is probably easier to wait until you have found a nice selection, and then install them all at once.. This saves you time and effort.

Go to Start:Settings:Control Panel:Fonts or Start:My Computer:C:Windows:Fonts (in Windows XP), and open up your Fonts folder.
(This is where all your installed fonts live).

Go to File:Install New Font:

The following dialog box will appear:

Navigate, using the Drives drop down if applicable, and the Folders window, to where you created your New Fonts folder. Double click on the folder to open it, and the fonts you have downloaded and extracted will appear in the top window (List of fonts). Click on the Select All button, (or just on certain font names, if you have already installed some previously, and have just found one or two more you fancied).

Your fonts are then selected, click OK, and they will be installed for you... You can check that they have appeared in the list of fonts in the fonts folder that is still open. If all is well, close your fonts folder, and you are finished! (If you use PSP, close this program before installing new fonts, and then when the fonts are installed, open it up again, and it will find all the new ones).
